Hugo grew up in North Wales. As a teenager, he would hitchhike from his house on the coast into the heart of the Snowdonia mountains to climb. By the age of 16, he was teaching rock climbing to local youth groups.
Hugo realized that climbing was a way to explore the world and he set off on a great adventure, climbing in South America, Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. It was in the USA that he settled down, got married, and had a daughter.
For a while, he guided in the Himalayas with a Canadian company, before he and his Sirdar Dendi Serpa left to start their own companies.
Since 2011, Hugo has been leading expeditions in the Himalayas through High Adventure Expeditions. He specializes in small, bespoke trips, often run alongside Happy Feet Mountaineers, the company which is run by his climbing friend, Dendi Sherpa. When not climbing, Hugo likes sailing, canoeing, and spending time with his family.
